If you're waiting on a visa decision and facing urgent circumstances, you may be eligible to request an “escalation” from Immigration New Zealand (INZ). This is a formal process that asks INZ to assess your application ahead of others in the queue.
An escalation is not a guarantee of faster processing, it’s a request for priority based on urgency. It can only get your application in front of an immigration officer faster, but they still need to go through a full assessment to ensure you meet all the criteria for the visa. INZ reviews these requests on a case-by-case basis, considering both the nature of your situation and the visa category you’ve applied under.
INZ is more likely to accept escalation requests for applications that already fall within a priority category, such as Green List roles; Straight to Residence; or other high-priority pathways. If your visa type is lower on INZ’s prioritisation list, your escalation will need to be backed by especially strong evidence.
To be considered, your request must clearly outline the urgent circumstances and include supporting documentation. This could relate to medical needs, humanitarian concerns, business impact, or other time-sensitive factors. Travel bookings are rarely sufficient on their own.
