Property Law Committee
Tina Hwang, Director and head of the Property & Disputes Team, has been re-appointed as Convenor of The Law Association Property Law Committee. This dynamic committee meets monthly to address pressing issues and regulatory changes impacting property lawyers. Over the years, the committee has proactively engaged with banks, organisations, and key stakeholders, advocating on behalf of property lawyers by providing recommendations and submitting legal submissions for regulatory changes on critical matters.
The new committee, set to commence in October 2024 for a two-year term, consists of 15 distinguished members, all bringing a wealth of expertise and experience to the table. Together, they will continue their work in advancing the profession. Tina is excited to lead the committee once again and contribute to these important discussions alongside its astute members. Information on the committee and members can be found here.
Property Disputes Committee
In addition to her role with the Property Law Committee, Tina has been an active member of The Law Association’s Property Disputes Committee for approximately 10 years. This committee offers an affordable and efficient way for parties to resolve property-related legal disputes. With an affordable cost of $200 plus GST (split between the parties) for each dispute, the process provides quick and cost-effective resolutions for issues such as conveyancing and lease disputes. Tina has enjoyed the process of reviewing agreed facts and submissions, working alongside esteemed colleagues to reach decisions that help parties quickly resolve their disputes. Some of these decisions have been published in a manual, which the committee is currently working to update. Information on the Property Disputes Committee and its members can be found here.
Civil Litigation Committee
Recently, Tina has taken on a new challenge by joining The Law Association's newly established Civil Litigation Committee. With her extensive experience in handling disputes across multiple forums, including the Employment Relations Authority, District Court, High Court, Court of Appeal, and even a pending case in the Supreme Court, Tina is eager to contribute to this vital area of law. As she continues to expand her work in civil litigation, Tina looks forward to offering her expertise and collaborating with other committee members. Information on the committee and members can be found here.
New Zealand Asian Women Lawyers Committee
As one of the founding members of the New Zealand Asian Women Lawyers Committee, Tina has been actively involved in this committee for the past two years. This sub-committee of New Zealand Asian Lawyers creates opportunities for Asian women lawyers to connect, network, and gain insights from industry leaders.
The committee has organised numerous successful events, including panel discussions featuring prominent female lawyers, meetings with judges, and HR sessions with recruiters from major law firms. These events have been invaluable in providing career advice and networking opportunities. Tina is passionate about continuing this work and looks forward to organising more enriching events in the future. More information on this committee can be found here.
Our Children, Our Community (OCOC)
Last, but not least, Tina’s commitment to giving back extends beyond the legal profession. In 2011, she and her husband founded Our Children, Our Community (OCOC), an initiative designed to inspire and empower local children. OCOC has hosted multiple events in both Christchurch and Auckland, often with sponsorship from Queen City Law and clients. These events have hosted police officers, firefighters, athletes, entertainers, and professionals from various fields to provide children with interactive experiences.
Each event culminates in an art competition, where children are encouraged to express what their community means to them or what they aspire to become when they grow up. Feedback from the children, such as “This is the best party ever” or “I want to be a policeman now when I grow up,” drives Tina’s passion for continuing these meaningful projects despite her busy schedule. Queen City Law is expected to sponsor another event soon. More information about this project can be found here.
Tina’s dedication to her clients, her profession, and her community remains at the forefront of everything she does. In addition to the above committees and community work, she regularly presents to other lawyers on property and disputes. She looks forward to continuing her work in all these areas to positively contribute to others.
