Partners of New Zealanders can get longer visas after new INZ announcement

By Andrew Nah

From 1 October 2024 onwards, partners of New Zealand citizens and residents may be entitled for work or visitor visas for a maximum of 3 years. This is an extra year from the previous 2-year maximum. However, the couple need to have been living together for at least 12 months to be eligible for this extra year.

This new change will apply to partnership-based applications received from 1 October onwards as well as applications that have been submitted but not approved yet. However, visas that have already been granted will not be automatically extended and you will have to make a new application.

The goal of this change is to give couples more time to prepare and apply for residency together, and to make things consistent with the increased visa durations for partners of temporary migrants.
