For years, the fastest route to New Zealand residence appeared to run through one door.
The Green List.
Secure a Tier 1 role with an accredited employer, meet the occupation-specific requirements, and apply for a Straight to Residence Visa.
From 24 August 2026, there may be another door.
And it is considerably wider.
The qualification changes the equation
Under the updated Skilled Migrant Category (SMC), an eligible New Zealand master’s degree, with a bachelor’s degree, will be worth 6 skilled resident points.
Six points is the threshold for the points-based SMC pathway.
That means a graduate who holds the qualifying master’s degree may not need to spend additional years accumulating New Zealand skilled work experience points.
The next critical step is securing a qualifying full-time skilled job or job offer from an accredited employer and meeting the remaining SMC requirements.
In practical terms, the pathway could look like this:
New Zealand Master’s Degree → Skilled Job Offer → Skilled Migrant Residence
That begins to look remarkably similar to Straight to Residence.
Similar destination. Broader route.
The Green List Tier 1 pathway allows a person to apply for residence once they secure an eligible Tier 1 job or job offer and meet the specific qualification, registration and remuneration requirements for that occupation.
It is a powerful pathway. But it is limited to the occupations on the Green List. The Skilled Migrant Category is broader.
The role does not necessarily need to be Green List Tier 1. It must instead meet the applicable definition of skilled employment, including the employer, skill level, pay and other requirements in place when the applicant applies.
That distinction opens the door to a much wider range of professional careers.
The opportunity is not that a master’s degree automatically grants residence. It does not.
The opportunity is that the right New Zealand master’s degree can provide all 6 points, leaving the qualifying skilled job or job offer as the final major piece of the SMC strategy.
The part that still needs planning
A job title alone is not enough.
The employment must be genuine, full-time, with an accredited employer and satisfy the relevant skilled-employment and remuneration requirements. Applicants must also meet the age, English, health and character requirements.
The master’s degree must also meet the new qualification requirements.
Where the 6-point claim relies on a supporting bachelor’s degree, evidence of that undergraduate qualification will be required. Immigration New Zealand has confirmed that applicants must generally provide both the bachelor’s certificate and academic transcript.
The pathway is quite clear. It is not automatic.
The Green List is no longer the only conversation
For the right applicant, Green List Tier 1 will remain one of the clearest routes to residence.
But from August 2026, international students may no longer need to restrict their career planning to a relatively narrow list of occupations.
A qualifying New Zealand master’s degree, followed by the right skilled employment, could create an SMC pathway with a similar practical outcome:
No additional period of skilled work experience required before becoming eligible to apply. The difference is reach.
The Green List is occupation-specific.
The updated SMC may offer the same direct movement from a qualifying job offer to residence eligibility across a much broader employment market. The Green List remains a door.
From August 2026, a New Zealand master’s may open another one.
