A New Pathway for International Graduates in New Zealand

By Henny Bunardy

New Zealand is introducing a new Short Term Graduate Work Visa from late 2026, giving eligible international graduates up to 6 months of open work rights. This visa is designed to help graduates gain local work experience and potentially transition into longer‑term work pathways. To qualify, applicants must meet financial, medical, and qualification criteria and apply within 3 months of completing their studies. The visa comes with important limitations, such as no business ownership, no partner/child sponsorship for work or student visas, and it is strictly non‑renewable.

The goal? To better align international graduate outcomes with New Zealand’s labour market needs, while continuing to support the growth and quality of international education.

This visa provides:

  • Up to 6 months of open work rights, allowing graduates to work for any employer.
  • A valuable pathway for graduates to secure employment and potentially transition to an Accredited Employer Work Visa.

To qualify, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Financial & Personal Requirements

  • Hold a minimum of NZD $5,000 for living expenses.
  • Must not have previously held a Short Term Graduate Work Visa or a Post Study Work Visa.
  • Must obtain written approval from:

    i. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, or
ii. The Ministry of Education, if their studies were funded under the New Zealand Scholarship
    Programme.

  • Provide a valid medical certificate and chest X-ray, depending on intended stay.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants must hold a qualification at NZQCF Level 5-7, which:

  • Was completed through full-time study of at least 24 weeks in New Zealand,
  • Is not an English language, foundation, or bridging qualification, and
  • Does not make them eligible for a Post Study Work Visa.

Visa holders must comply with the following conditions:

  • They may work under an employment agreement or contract for services only.
  • Owning or operating a business is not permitted.
  • They cannot support a partner for a work visa nor a child for a Dependent Child Student Visa.
  • The visa is strictly non‑renewable.
