NZ Master's Degrees Can Now Unlock Six Residence Points

By Sonny Lam

New Zealand’s latest Skilled Migrant Category changes could significantly shorten the pathway to residence for some international graduates who complete a master’s degree here.

Under the Skilled Migrant Category settings that took effect on 24 August 2026, an eligible New Zealand master’s degree can attract up to six skilled resident points. This means some graduates may be able to meet the points requirement for residence without first accumulating additional years of skilled work experience in New Zealand.

The detail matters. To claim six points for a New Zealand master’s degree, an applicant must have completed at least 30 weeks of full-time study in New Zealand and hold a bachelor’s degree. A New Zealand master’s that does not meet those requirements may instead attract five points, meaning additional skilled work experience would generally be needed to reach the six-point threshold.

For international students considering not only where to study but where to build their longer-term future, that distinction could make New Zealand a more attractive option.

QCL Consultant Sonny Lam recently spoke to RNZ about the changes and their potential impact on international master’s students and graduates, including how the new settings could shorten the journey from study to residence for those who qualify.

The changes form part of a wider overhaul of the Skilled Migrant Category, with the Government seeking to better recognise New Zealand qualifications while providing clearer residence pathways for skilled migrants.

For students and graduates, however, the key message is simple: the qualification you choose, where you complete it and how it fits within the Skilled Migrant Category can now have a significant impact on your potential pathway to residence.
