Starting 2026 with Opportunity and Optimism

By Aimee Young

As we step into 2026, it is a good time to pause and reflect on where we are, while also looking ahead with confidence and clarity. At Queen City Law, we start the year with a strong sense of optimism for our clients, our community, and the wider New Zealand landscape.

A Positive Outlook for the Year Ahead

The year ahead will bring both challenges and opportunities, but the overall outlook feels encouraging. Economic indicators point to renewed momentum across several key sectors, and there is a growing sense that confidence is slowly but steadily returning. We see 2026 as a year of preparation, progress, and possibility.

We are closely watching developments around AIP and BIV settings, which continue to influence decision-making for businesses, investors, and individuals. These frameworks play an important role in supporting sustainable growth, and we expect further refinement and clarity as the year unfolds.

Closer to home, the opening of the convention centre and the underground railway, right here in the city where we work, bodes well for Auckland once again becoming the vibrant centre it has been in the past. We are also scheduled to play a central role in the development of some waterfront hotels, and Tāmaki Makaurau needs projects like these to help the city come alive again.

Housing Market: Cautious Optimism

The housing market remains a key focus for many New Zealanders, and 2026 may prove to be an important turning point. With hopes of increased activity and greater stability, we are encouraged by ongoing discussions around housing supply, affordability, and access.

Anticipated changes affecting overseas buyers are also likely to shape the property landscape. As these changes come into effect, we expect renewed interest, alongside a continued emphasis on fairness and long-term sustainability. For buyers, sellers, and investors alike, understanding what lies ahead will be essential.

An Election Year: Policy, Direction, and Opportunity

As an election year, 2026 carries added significance. Election years often help set the direction for future policy, particularly in areas such as housing, infrastructure, business regulation, and investment. While periods of change can bring uncertainty, they also create opportunities for informed discussion, careful planning, and engagement.

At Queen City Law, we remain committed to helping our clients navigate change with confidence, whatever the political landscape may bring.

Community Matters: Harvest of Hope

Beyond the legal and economic environment, community remains at the heart of what we do. We were heartened by how warmly our donation to the Harvest of Hope initiative was received. Knowing it helped bring cheer, dignity, and practical support to families over the Christmas season meant a great deal to our team.

Initiatives like Harvest of Hope remind us of the importance of looking after one another, particularly during times of uncertainty, and we are proud to support causes that make a real difference.

A Year of the Fire Horse

In the lunar calendar, 2026 is the Year of the Fire Horse. Traditionally, the Fire Horse is associated with energy, momentum, independence, and forward movement. It is seen as a year that favours decisive action, courage, and renewed drive, qualities that align well with a period of rebuilding, growth, and fresh opportunity.

While every year brings its own uncertainties, the symbolism of the Fire Horse is a positive reminder to move forward with confidence, embrace change, and act with purpose. It reflects a time to be proactive rather than passive, and to approach new opportunities with clarity and determination.
